A 13-year-old immigrant girl from Nigeria was forced to take on the persona of a migrant girl in order to get a job as a maid in a Japanese restaurant.
The story was a viral hit, prompting Twitter to launch a “immigration girl” campaign, a trend that has been used to raise awareness of issues of migrant rights in Japan.
On Tuesday, the restaurant chain said it would stop hiring undocumented workers and was considering banning the service.
The restaurant chain also said it was considering imposing an immigration fee on its employees and would work to bring a minimum wage for foreign workers to the minimum wage in the country, as required by Japanese law.
“The restaurant is currently looking at other options, but we are still considering a fee that will be paid to all foreign workers in the restaurant,” the chain said in a statement.
