DHS: DHS to close more than 3,500 immigration facilities by 2020

DHS plans to close the majority of its 3,000 immigration detention facilities by the end of 2020, the agency said Wednesday.

The number of detention facilities is expected to drop to 3,200 by 2020, a significant reduction from the roughly 2,500 facilities at the height of the immigration crisis in 2015.

The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement that it will continue to work with Congress to expand capacity for ICE and other federal immigration officials to help reduce immigration enforcement costs, as well as improve the capacity of local law enforcement and other government agencies.

The agency said it will hire more immigration and public safety personnel, expand training and expand capacity to house detainees in a more humane manner.
